CHAPTER 7

Greg strode into the house and tore off his shirt, which had been muddied when he’d mucked out one of the stables. After meeting with the Cattle Club guys, he’d needed a few moments with his paint, and the powerful horse had relaxed him, as usual.

The house was quiet with the kids in bed. Tara had fallen asleep on the sofa with a book over her chest, and he studied her for a moment. Her lips were slightly parted, and she breathed evenly. Her mass of curls tumbled around her face, and she looked young and defenseless in her worn T-shirt and yoga pants with fluffy bright blue socks on her small feet.

Not for the first time, he wondered where they’d be if he hadn’t broken things off. She’d been more than willing to travel wherever he was stationed, if necessary, but there was no doubt she was a small-town girl. He should’ve known that she’d sacrifice herself for Brian.

She was so pretty his heart hurt. During the years apart, she’d filled out very nicely. Her skin was smooth and her features fragile. How was he going to let her go?

Not that he had a choice. She wasn’t really his to keep. The woman was just doing him a favor, and he needed to remember that fact. No doubt she’d eventually marry some nice, mellow guy who wasn’t plagued by nightmares and who didn’t have a ranch to run and three lost teenagers to raise. She’d have her own kids.

The thought was like taking the blunt end of a knife to the chest. Something that had actually happened to him.

He moved to the master bedroom that had once belonged to his parents and chucked the shirt into the overflowing dirty clothes hamper. He took a quick shower before drawing on a pair of worn sweats. Finger-combing his wet hair, he walked back into the living room, where Tara had curled up on her side and the book had fallen to the floor. He gently lifted her off the sofa and returned to the master bedroom, where she jolted awake and slapped his chest.

“It’s okay,” he murmured. “I’m just putting you to bed.”

She started to struggle, so he placed her on her feet.

“Wake up, Tara.” He put command in his voice and held on to her arms until she’d gained her balance.

She blinked up at him as realization dawned in her pretty brown eyes. “Oh, I must have fallen asleep.” She pushed her wild sandy blond hair over her shoulder. “Sorry about that.”

“No problem.” The bed was large and comfortable behind her, and he made himself look away from it. Just touching her for a moment and having her in his arms had shot intense hunger through him.

She looked around the room, appearing lost and pretty much adorable. “I was figuring I’d sleep on the sofa.”

He may have been a soldier for a long time living in dirt and caves, but his mama had definitely taught him better than that. “No, you’re taking the master bedroom.
